JACKSONVILLE – CWO-4 Henry Ashe Bookhardt, USMC (RET), 91, of Jacksonville died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at East Carolina Heart Institute in Greenville.
Mr. Bookhardt was born Nov. 22, 1918, to the late Waldo and Wilhelmina Metts Bookhardt in Elloree, S.C. Henry was a three war Marine having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam during a 30 year career from 1940 to 1970. He was the oldest member of the Marine Corps Tankers Association. During the Korean War, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V for his heroic actions. Prior to the Marine Corps, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for three years. He was a faithful member of Cardinal Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Bookhardt; and his son, Charles Bookhardt.
He is survived by a sister, Wilhelmina Binfield of Elloree, SC; three sons, Henry Bookhardt and his wife, Deloris of Spring City, Tenn., Robert Ashe Bookhardt of Morehead City and William Eugene Bookhardt of Jacksonville. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Lisa Bookhardt and her husband, Andrew Parker of Arlington, Va., Heather Comfort and her husband, David of Jacksonville, H. J. Bookhardt of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kris Bookhardt and wife, Andi of Maryville, Tenn.; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Alexis Comfort of Jacksonville and Cameron Bookhardt of Maryville, Tenn.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville with the Rev. James F. Cowart officiating. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park with military honors.
The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
